Florence and the Machine: Lungs
Review by Chrissy

Florence and the Machine is a band from London, Great Britain. The band consists of Florence Welch (lead singer), Rob Ackroyd (Guitar), Chris Hayden (Drums), Isabella Summers (Keyboards) and Tom Monger (Harp)

You either may know Florence and the Machine from their #5 Hit "You've got the Love" (cover version of Candi Station's "You've got the Love") and their debut album "Lungs or from a "Vodafone"- advertising campaign that has previously aired on television, which had featured Florence and the Machine's song "Kiss with a fist".

Their debut album "Lungs" was been released on July 6, 2009 and was ranked #1 in the UK Charts and #2 in the Irish Charts. The album has received 2 x Platinum (both UK) and 1 x Gold (Australia).

Florence and the Machine is currently on tour and working on a 2nd album.

A MySpace Act of the Week article on Florence and the Machine can be found here

1. Dog Days Are Over
The opening track starts with a nice melody played by a harp, continues with a piano and a loud drumming beat. After the slow and quiet musical introduction, the track continues with a great beat and a screaming singer and is absolutely perfect to get into the music of Florence and the Machine.

2. Rabbit Heart (Raise it up)
This song was Florence and the Machine's 2nd single off their album and was ranked #12 in the UK charts. The song sounds pretty refreshing and you can't imagine that you have ever listened to something so powerful like this.

3. I'm not calling you a liar
"I'm not calling you a liar" is a bit more relaxing than the songs before, even if it's still powerful. But it's still nice to relax to lyrics like "...I'm not calling you a liar, just don't lie to me; I'm not calling you a thief, but don't steal from me; I'm not calling you a ghost, but stop haunting me..."

4. Howl
"Howl" is propably one of the best songs on the whole album.
It is very powerful and melodic (with some kind of orchestra in the background) and you just feel that Florence Welch puts all her heart into "Howl"

5. Kiss with a fist
This powerful song is leading you into starting a party and dance all night long. In one word: Great!

6. Girl with one eye
"Girl with One Eye" is played with only a few instruments including a nice guitar. Can Imagine it sounds absolutely great live and isn't hard to perform on stage.

7. Drumming Song
As it is said in the title, "Drumming song" has a lot of drums in it and an awesome great melody. "Drumming Song" is the 4th single off the album.

8. Between Two Lungs
"Between Two Lungs" starts very slow and gets faster and faster after a while. It can be a bit annoying after a while, because you just don't want to wait until it's played faster.

9. Cosmic Love
"Cosmic Love" is a nice song and not too powerful, which is a good change after all those great powerful songs.

10. My Boy Builds Coffins
This song is great to relax to and just as "Cosmic Love" not too powerful. "My boy builds coffins; he makes them all day but it's not just for work and it isn't for play; He's made one for himself, One for me too, One of these days he'll make one for you."

11. Hurricane Drunk
Starts slow and is even better to relax to. Nice melody and great vocals.

12. Blinding
The lyrics of "Blinding" and the melody sound a bit depressed or sad, but it's absolutely great. "No more crawling like a crow for a boy, for a body in the garden; No more dreaming like a girl so in love, so in love with the wrong world"

13. You've got the Love
Florence and the Machine's cover version of Candi Station's "You've got the Love" is propably the best one of all cover versions. It reminds you of a great love song that isn't cheesy but still absolutely lovely and sweet. The song is the perfect ending to a great record.

"Lungs" is available through Amazon, iTunes or buy it at your local record store.
