Portrait Magazine - Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Portrait?
Portrait is a website designed to look like and function as a teen magazine. Each month we launch a new issue full of cool articles, reviews and celebrity interviews, written by and for young adults. We have a fantastic team of High School and College students, each of whom is working toward being a professional journalist or graphic designer of tomorrow; in the mean time they put their talents and growing skills to good use working to make Portrait one of the coolest places online today!

Where can I buy Portrait Magazine?
Unfortunately, Portrait isn't currently in print. Portrait is just a website that's designed to look and function like a teen magazine. All our articles are 'published' here at the website and instead of a normal website layout, Sarah designs us an awesome graphic that resembles a magazine cover. Maybe someday we'll have the funding to publish Portrait!

Where is Portrait based?
Portrait doesn't really have a 'home' country. The webmaster and owner of the site lives in New Zealand, the site is hosted in the US and we have writers and designers from seven different countries around the world; from Uruguay to USA!

How can I write for Portrait Magazine?
We have positions available for graphic designers, proofreaders and writers. You can read more information about applying at the links below:

How old is Portrait?
Portrait opened on August 2nd, 2003. Back then it was just a multi-celeb fan site. It became a 'magazine', in September 2004. Check out our Archives section to read all our old issues!

How can I contact the team?
Send an e-mail to portraitmagazine@yahoo.co.nz

I have a review for Portrait! Where can I submit it?
You can submit it here

Why wasn't my favorite celebrity a nominee in the Top 30 Under 30 poll?
We did our best to include everyone eligible but unfortunately there are so many people that qualify that we couldn't think of everyone! Prior to launching the poll, we asked you to nominate your favorites and hundreds of you contributed. Unfortunately, there were still a few who were overlooked. We're sorry about that and we'll try to remember them next year.
Your favorite celeb also may not have been nominated of they were turning 30 during the course of the poll or around the same time the final article would have launched.
They may also not have been included if they're no longer working in the entertainment industry or haven't been working and releasing new projects recently.

Who makes the cover?
Sarah. She rocks! You can read her (and our other team's) profiles here

When will the next issue of Portrait be available?
On the first of the next month!

How do you choose who is featured on the cover?
We assemble a list of young celebs with films, albums or TV projects being released around the time of an issues launch. The month before we include a poll asking you to choose your favorite from the list. The poll can be found on our left, under our features and will remain up for the first 15 days of the month.

4. You can donate money via Paypal to help with our hosting experiences. Click on the button below.

5. You can submit a comment on each month's issue and give our writers feedback on their hard work. We appreciate constructive criticism but please remember that many of our writers are young and still learning many writing skills. Some of our writers are even from other countries where English is not the official language. Therefore, their wording may be a little different or unusual. Cruel and devisive contents are pointless, mean and will not be taken into consideration. Portrait exists to encourage and help budding writers, not tear them down.

Why do you use Shareapic to host your images?
As you probably know, Shareapic is a paid image host. While most hosting services like tinypic, imageshack, photobucket, etc. collect the profit from people viewing your images (via their advertising), Shareapic shares a small portion of theirs with it's users. It's not much money (0.22USD per 1,000 image views), we manage to scrape together just enough money to pay for Portrait's hosting expenses. Without Shareapic Portrait would not only be a drain on our time but also on our wallets, and would resultinly have to close.

I send an e-mail applying to write for Portrait and haven't heard back? Don't you want me?
We're sorry about the delay. We get a lot of applications to write for Portrait (sometimes multiple applications per day) and can only respond to a certain amount per week to avoid crossovers. Please be patient, we will get back to you.

How do I read the articles?
On the main page (www.portraitmagazine.net) there are instructions on navigating the site (in the top, middle center).

I have a question that wasn't answered here. What do I do?
Submit your question below.

What would be the average age for your readers?
Last time we surveyed (a number of years ago) the average reader was between the age of 13 and 16 but overall our readership (and writing staff) varies from ages 10 through to 25.

Are any of the interviews given to the celeb legit, or just fan made? There was a mention of my twitter question and a response and I totally squeed. All of our interviews are legitimate. You're viewing our questions (and some submitted by fans) and the celebs response. Keep an eye on our Youtube page as we plan to start posting audio rips of our phone interviews at some point in the future.
