Book Club: Audrey, Wait! - Portrait Magazine, March 2010 Issue

This Month: Audrey, Wait!
September Issue - Written by: Julie Goldberg

Isn’t it loads of fun to hear your name in a song? To feel like some dreamy musician out there is singing just for you? Well, it’s kind of the opposite in Robin Benway’s “Audrey, Wait!” Audrey is a typical teenager dealing with not the easiest situation: breaking up with her boyfriend. Evan seems to be a self-absorbed, musician with good hygiene being his upstanding quality. Audrey knows she has to break up with him and does. Little does she know, it’d change her life forever.

As most musicians do, they discover inspiration for songs within the people they cherish or hate. Hence, Evan’s band’s new hit single “Audrey, Wait!” (a vengeful break up song about you-know-who). It starts off bad enough that it was performed in front of her fellow peers but her life starts to spiral out of control when Evan’s band makes it big. Audrey has to juggle hearing the song on the radio, crazy fans, the paparazzi, tabloids, and her new romance. Will she be able to handle it? Or will she be the next Chris Crocker break down?

This novel holds lots of promise for Robin Benway. For her first book, it was captivating from the get-go. Heck, even if this was her 50th book, I would love it all the same. Not only was the writing clever and witty, it held a message underneath all the crazy scenarios Audrey had to endure. Media is a big part of our lives and this novel shows us the not-so-glamorous part of it all.

The characters were also very believable. Despite the crazy plot, it was highly realistic. I found myself thinking, “Sadly, that could totally happen.” If you don’t take my word for it, check out the rave reviews on the back cover. In the end, this is a book that will have you smiling for plenty of different reasons.

Be sure to follow Robin on her road of being an author by keeping your eyes open for her next book which is titled “The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May & June” coming out in August.
